How Compliments Can Foster Connections

Giving a quick compliment may not seem significant, but it can help to create real connections. This article highlights a fabulous podcast is hosted by Yale University psychology professor, Dr. Laurie Santos, an expert on the science of happiness. Her class on happiness has been the most popular class in Yale’s history.

This episode discusses how connecting increases our happiness and how small actions can help us build relationships more quickly that we might have thought possible. It highlights Troy Hawke, an alter-ego of comedian Milo McCabe, who is a “professional complimenter”. In heartwarming and funny videos online, Hawke greets and gives specific compliments to passersby on the street.

It also features Xuan Zhao, a researcher who studies connections. Her interest in such research started with an innocuous compliment on her appearance by a boyfriend (interestingly, now, her husband). It completely changed her view of herself and set her on a trajectory where she now studies the psychology of social connections at Stanford University. She is also developing Flourish, an AI coach to support wellness and growth, now available through early access.

The episode is packed with research and practical ideas. Give it a listen and consider subscribing to the podcast. It’s a favorite!
