Online Resources
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to push relationships to the back burner, however, human connection is more important than ever. TED Talks are among the best sources of intelligent conversation on a wide range of subjects, including the value of building relationships. We’ll look at five TED Talks that discuss the value of connection and how it can improve our wellbeing.
Why You Should Talk to Strangers for Health and Wellness
I felt a bit seen with this one, being somewhat introverted. In this TED Talk, Kio Stark questions the oft-repeated mantra, “Don’t talk to strangers”. She contends that interacting with strangers can lead to new encounters and connections. To expand our horizons and improve our lives, Stark challenges us to welcome the serendipity that can happen when we strike up a conversation with a stranger.
The Secret to Adult Friendships
In her insightful TED Talk, Marisa Franco addresses the sometimes difficult challenge of making new friends as an adult. She offers simple strategies and helpful advice for getting beyond our self-imposed barriers and forming new relationships. Franco’s offers advice and hope to anyone wanting to build new friendships and a sense of community.
5 Ways to Create Stronger Connections
This TED Talk outlines how to improve existing relationships. Robert Reffkins outlines five key principles, including being fully present and embracing vulnerability, in order to enhance the quality of our relationships. His insights encourage us to value genuine relationships and create ties that provide support and fulfillment. There are ideas that anyone can implement easily and quickly.
I love Dr. Sherry Turkle’s work and I referenced it during my own doctoral research. She explores the paradox of our hyperconnected yet often lonely existence in her insightful TED Talk. She looks at how technology might promote a sense of loneliness and alienation even while it allows for continuous communication. She highlights how crucial it is to continue to have face-to-face interactions and genuine connection.
The Need for Human Connection and Why it Starts With Ourselves
This TED Talk highlights the importance of fostering our relationships with others and ourselves, and highlights the fact that meaningful interactions are what our brains are wired to seek out. I completely agree with Carroll’s assertion that cultivating these relationships is not only advantageous but also necessary for our wellbeing. We can make the world a more satisfying place for ourselves and people around us if we embrace what it is to be human and value genuine connections.
